Google has a brand-new kind of laptop, and it’s called the Googlebook. Think of it as your Android phone’s best friend: a premium laptop built on Android, with Google’s Gemini AI woven into everything, from the mouse pointer to the keyboard. The first models went on sale on 4 October in the US and a day later in six more countries.
Why it matters: for years Google had two worlds, Android on phones and ChromeOS on Chromebooks. Googlebooks bring them together, so your phone and your laptop finally feel like one family.
So what exactly is a Googlebook?
According to Google, Googlebooks are built on Android technology combined with desktop foundations from ChromeOS, and are “designed for Gemini Intelligence”. The first ones come from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo, starting at $899.
Google sets some ground rules for every maker. ITPro lists them: a touchscreen, an aluminium-magnesium body, at least 16 GB of RAM, a dedicated “G” key for Gemini, and a glowing light bar on the lid that signals things like notifications or battery level. Google adds that they use Intel or Qualcomm processors with AI chips, and promises up to 14 hours of battery life.

The fun new tricks
- Magic Pointer: call up Gemini right at your cursor for help with whatever you are pointing at. You can switch it off.
- Rambler: talk freely and it turns your speech into tidy, structured writing.
- Create My Widget: describe the widget you want in plain words and Gemini builds it, for example a dashboard pulling from Gmail and Calendar.
- Phone magic: at sign-in, your phone’s settings, passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages move over (encrypted), you can pick up phone tasks on the laptop and even run your phone’s apps in a window.
Apps, games and the boring-but-important stuff
Googlebooks run the desktop Chrome browser with extensions plus Android apps such as Photoshop, Lightroom, CapCut and Netflix, Google says, plus Android games and a year of GeForce NOW cloud gaming. You also get 12 months of Google AI Pro, with 5 TB of storage, three months of YouTube Premium and up to 10 years of feature updates for the operating system.
Where can you buy one?
- On sale now: US since 4 October; Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia since 5 October.
- Spain and Latin America: not in the first wave. Google has not announced dates yet.
- Price: from $899, which puts Googlebooks in the premium part of the market. ITPro describes them as more premium than Chromebooks.
Our take
If you live in the Android world and want a laptop that feels like an extension of your phone, Googlebooks are the most exciting thing Google has done with laptops in years. If you are in Spain, enjoy the show from the front row: first reviews will tell us whether it is worth the wait.
